![]() However, on ramps and in pools, Ventures may add some much needed stability – especially for newer skaters, or those re-learning. For me, Ventures go a little too far in this way and I do wonder if this is what the “Ventures don’t turn” people are referring to: a longer wheelbase usually means your turns will be slower. ![]() Like Thunders, Ventures push their axles out towards the deck’s extremities, which makes for a really stable feeling (because of the lengthened actual wheelbase). Riding Ventures loose proved too ‘tippy’ for me (although Indy riders may prefer that feel, because Indys are designed as tippy as they come). Forged components also look less lumpen.Īs usual, I gained no benefit from ‘upgrading’ the bushings, but I did benefit from cranking the kingpin nut down a fair bit on the stock bushings to get the desired feel. Forging makes for a stronger baseplate, so it can be made thinner and thus lighter. This makes them a bit lighter than standard Wides, but nothing to write home about compared to Thunder Titaniums or, the sublime low weight of Tensor Maglights.Ī forged baseplate normally means that the truck’s axle height sits about 1mm lower than standard cast baseplates. These particular Wides are of the V Light persuasion, meaning that they have forged baseplates and hollow kingpins. Not that I’ve ever been badly affected by wheelbite – and I’ve never ridden trucks which didn’t exhibit it – but for some it’s a big thing. So there’s plenty of room to manoeuvre and not a huge amount of wheelbite. They are also a ‘hi’ (high clearance) truck, as opposed to Venture’s recent reputation for low, streety trucks. The 5.8 Wides are Venture’s 149 equivalent trucks, so not really very wide at all – just wide, relative to modern Ventures. I can’t account for all the nonsense that went on during the small-wheels-baggy-pants era, but these Ventures do turn. ![]() How many times have you heard the refrain, “Ventures don’t turn?”
